Romeo And Juliet: Love And Their Ends



The love story of Romeo and Juliet is widely read and known throughout the western world. Friar Laurence states one of the major themes in the play: “Therefore, love moderately, long love doth so”(II, vi, Line 14). He sees that the two lovers are so passionately in love that it might “burn out.” Throughout the play are many examples of love and their ends. The first example is of Romeo’s love for Rosaline.
As the play opens, Romeo Montague is first mentioned fleeing from Benvolio, Lord Montague’s nephew. Benvolio catches up with Romeo later and discovers that Romeo is passionately in love with Rosaline. Unfortunately for Romeo, the love he has is none but courtly love, love for ...

he will die but he goes to the party anyway, saying,
“I fear, too early. For my mind misgives
Some consequence, yet hanging in the stars,
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels, and expire the term
Of a despised life closed in my breast
By some vile forfeit of untimely death
But He that hat the steerage of my course

However, when he reaches the party, his love for Rosaline vanishes and Romeo falls passionately in love with Juliet Capulet.
Once Romeo sees Juliet, it is love at first sight. Both are unknown to the other, but they kiss because of their love. When each discover the other’s name, they still love each other with a burning passion that survives even this blow. After the party, Romeo meets up with Juliet at the balcony outside of her room. They exchange vows and soon get married. That very same day, Romeo witnesses the slaying of his best friend Mercutio by his new kinsman Tybalt. ...
