To Room Nineteen: Conflict Between Reason and Emotion

Doris Lessing's story "To Room Nineteen" is, in many ways, a story about the ever-present conflict between reason and emotion. It opens admitting such: "This is a story, I suppose, about a failure in intelligence: the Rawling's marriage was grounded in intelligence." Susan Rawlings is an intellectual woman, and therefore suppresses emotion so much that family life, full of emotional unpleasantness, drives her mad. Lessing masterfully chronicles her decent into depression and madness, and the man in the garden is fundamentally a signal that Susan's intelligence has ultimately failed, and she's well on her way to insanity.
