Criminals typically commit crimes in a certain fashion. If they repeat the crime, they will most likely do so in a similar manner (Holmes and Holmes, 1). It is stated that each criminal has a MO (mode of operation) in which they conduct their criminal activities. This fact is the basis for profiling criminals. The profiling of serial killers yields specific classifications in itself. Louis Vullion, the serial killer known as the Maddog in John Sanford’s Rules of Prey, fits a specific type of serial killer profiled by Robert M. Holmes and Stephen T. Lastly, the killer has no instrumental or expressive motive. He/she is not doing the killing for material (instrumental) gain or emotional (expressive) satisfaction. Rather, the serial killer’s motive is the pure pleasure it brings to him/her. Within these parameters are different types of labeled serial killers.
One broad classification for serial killers is their spatial mobility. There are two types defined, geographically stable and geographically transient. The geographically stable killer lives in the same location for a long period of time, does the killing in the same area, and disposes the bodies at the killing site or close to it.
