St. Francis de Sales was born in the Savoy region of France on August 21, 1567. Born into a noble family, he was educated in the humanities at the Jesuit college of Clermont at the University of Paris. Once he graduated, his father had a position secured for him at the Senate of Chambery. Because his family was of a higher class it was expected of him to study law and become a noble (Holder, 236). However, Francis instead chose to join the Catholic priesthood.

This did not stop St. Francis de Sales to stop preaching the word of God. To spread the teachings of the Catholic Church St. Francis de Sales preached sermons and wrote many books.
St. Francis de Sales most famous book is entitled Introduction to the Devout Life. The book offers advice for a person wishing to pursue a holy life in the world. Francis felt that God calls all people to a devout life and living this devout life was a wonderful thing (Holder, 236). The book is separated into five sections with each addressing different issues.
