Saint Joseph’s has been around for nearly 200 years, 196 to be exact. Through the many years of its existence St. Joseph’s has had many architects and designs. Originally the building was a Spanish style establishment. It was first constructed in the early 1800’s in California. The last design was widely accepted at the time it was constructed. Today St. Joseph’s cathedral is a cherished icon of the community.
St. Joseph’s cathedral has had about five different architects due to earthquakes and fires. In 1803 the first St. Joseph church was built, making it the first parish in California. This structure, made out of adobe, was very small and unable to stand up to earthquakes. In ...

Theodore Lenzen was born in Prussia in 1883. He came to the United States with his family when he was 21 years old. Before he designed St. Joseph’s he was known for a few other local buildings: City Hall; Auzerais House; Vendome Hotel. Bryan Clinch was of Irish decent he was the author of a book called California and Its Missions. Clinch was given much recognition of an earlier project of his. He reconstructed the Santa Clara Mission after the severe earthquake of 1868.
The design of St. Joseph Cathedral that stands today, “Was based on the 1434 concept of Renaissance artist Alberti”, according to Pierce. The design has also been compared to St. Peter’s basilica in Rome because it uses the same Greek cross plan. St. Peter’s does have a dome but it does not have any towers like St. Joseph’s.
