In the movie Scanners, Dr. Ruth organizes a scanning session in which Cameron Vale faces a "yoga master" in a session of "psychic sparring." The scene begins at approximately 31 minutes, and ends at approximately 34 min and 30 seconds into the movie. Cameron Vale (the scanner). The dominant motif in this scene is the use of sound because it creates tension for the viewers and it heightens our senses. “We’re strongly inclined to think of sound as simply an accompaniment to the real basis of cinema: the moving images” (Bordwell & Thompson 269). The ideology in Hollywood is that sound is a secondary factor. Cronenberg proves this ideology wrong and takes sound one step further in this scene and throughout the whole film. Sound engages a different sense mode and it “synchronizes the senses” according to Soviet director Sergei Einstein.

The scene begins with Dr. Ruth and Cameron Vale entering the “psychic gymnasium”, the sound of their footsteps is magnified so the viewer feels as if they are walking towards them. There is a close up of Dr. Ruth when he is explaining Cameron what he wants him to do, this creates expectations for the viewer that Cameron will not be able to control the “supposedly uncontrollable yoga master” ...
