Student achievement is pivotal in relation to school culture. It took me a while to totally understand the ingredients that it took to consistently foster this idea. This simply means ownership belongs to everyone. It is the belief in my schools that everyone has an invested interest towards seeing to it that everyone succeeds. I emphatically call them “buddies.” Yes, everyone has a buddy. A buddy is someone who tutors, calls to make sure they understand their homework, gives encouragement, helps to solve behavior issues at school and overall, just a person who truly cares about your well-being. Each week both buddies go over their assessments in the grade level data notebook. For example, if Buddy A did not score well on recognizing complex sentences and Buddy B did an outstanding job on this skill, then Buddy B’s task is to tutor his buddy for 15 minutes in the morning until buddy A understands the skill. Not only is Buddy A receiving tutorial from his homeroom teacher but from his buddy as well. When buddy A is ready to be retested, the teacher gives him/her an assessment on that skill.
