Schools Don't Educate

Schools in America have many flaws, but it’s unclear what some of those are. American schools rank at the bottom of nineteen nations in reading, writing and arithmetic. Our teenage suicide rate is the highest in the world. Something is wrong and it just may be school. The truth is that schools don't really educate, they only teach how to obey orders. This institution, known as school, is cruel and has no conscience. A bell rings suddenly someone, who is writing a poem, must close his notebook and walk up the hall to different classroom where he or she must memorize something else, until the bell rings again.

The system we participate in is psychopathic. Children sit in confinement with people of exactly the same age and social class. They are cut off from the diversity of life.

One must suffer from sociopathy to want to be part of a system that compels you to listen to a stranger reading poetry when you want to learn to construct buildings, or to sit with a stranger discussing the construction of buildings when you want to read poetry.

This system also forces students to move from cell to cell at the sound of a bell for every day of their youth in an institution that allows you no privacy. It even cuts into what could be family time by following you into your home demanding that you do ...
