Science fiction is the genre of ideas and philosophy. This genre is sometimes more interested with exploring ideas than developing plot or character. It explores possibilities, pushes boundaries and forces the reader to answer the questions who, what if, when, where and how? Science fiction is concerned with all of us rather than individuals, and with how we got to be what we are, and what we might become. A notable example of this is Daniel Keys "Flowers for Algernon". Throughout the majority of human life on earth, society did not change rapidly enough for people to be able to imagine a future different from the time period they were currently living in. Also, many parts of the Earth were still unexplored, this may be why many older science fiction novels were set in the current time period they were written from. Earlier science fiction was more likely to address social rather than scientific problems because scientific technology was not as advanced. This is something many current science fiction authors would like to get back to. In the short film "World of Tomorrow", Emily Prim stated "the future is just everyone watching a collection of videos and events from the past" (Hertzfeldt). If we pay attention to our past, we can better predict our future without going in a direction that makes us miss being in the past.
