A Search for Identity

The childhood of a person will always be remembered, and will affect them as they grow older. The lifestyle we have as children determines whether we have a positive or negative impact as adults towards society. This is evident in the poem, “Un Trip through the Mind Jail.” Salinas reminisces of his childhood while behind bars in the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. As he sits in imprisonment he only wishes for some emotion: smiling, crying, laughing, anything. In the end just like his childhood, he wishes for one thing, a sense of belonging, an identity. He then takes a journey through his mind to find exactly who he was in order to determine who he will later ...

He brings up many memories he had as a child, as an adolescent, and the neighborhood surroundings that were so familiar to him hoping maybe it will spark an idea for an identity of his own. The title of the poem is a metaphor, comparing the life he is living on the outside, the jail to the life he is living on the inside, his identity. Not only is the poem’s title a metaphor, but it is also the controlling idea. The controlling idea is the theme of the overall poem. The title sets up the theme of the author’s life and the person he is desperate to find. Before reading the poem the readers may not understand the title, but as they begin to dissect and deconstruct each stanza they may begin to understand the metaphor that is displayed in, “Un trip through the Mind Jail.”
Imbedded in the poem are many poetic themes. One theme that is evident is the idea that childhood shapes a person. Salina states many things he remembers from his younger days in his old neighborhoods. For example ...
