Sergeant York

Sergeant York's full name was Alvin Cullum York. He received the most medals of any U.S. soldiers in World War I. He even got the Medal of Honor. He was so famous that people made a movie about him in 1941.

Before the War

He had ten brothers and sisters, and he was the third born. His parents were very poor, so he did not have a good education. He helped his father grow and hunt the food for family. He learned a way of hunting turkeys where he would kill a whole line of turkeys by always shooting the last one. After his father died, he helped his mom raise his younger sisters and brothers. Actually, York did not want to kill people because of his religious belief, and he refused the reward and any occupation. Then, the director of the troop told York, this war is a boon for people, justice, and defense. When a country cannot stand the conqueror, they would decide to fight in battle. York thought about this contradiction on the peak of a mountain. Finally, he found a new definition in the Bible, so he took part in the war, and he said 'yes' to the general. The U.S. was joining the war, so he went to Europe to fight against the German. His fighting life was starting; with his friends he dug trenches and fought the enemy. During that period, most of his friends died by disease, bomb shell, hunger and Germans' guns. He was not afraid of being killed and was very brave.

He killed a lot of Germans and was very important for the war. On October 8, 1918, York helped win an important battle. The U.S. troops were in trouble because they were caught by German machine guns ...
