Imagine the suspense of being on a ship with another passenger having an oblong box approximately the size of a coffin. The story is told in the first person with the author being curious as to what was in the oblong box and why the box was placed in the room of Mr. Cornelius Wyatt. When considering the settings in any story, it is important to consider the geographical location, the time, weather conditions, social conditions, and the mood. All of these parts of the setting play an important role in the story written by Edgar Allan Poe called, “The Oblong Box.”

author questions why Wyatt has three roomy state rooms and this creates the atmosphere of suspense and challenge. Why does Wyatt have three big rooms for only himself, his wife, and two sisters? This setting will be a focus of the entire story as the author continually tries to understand why Wyatt needs three large staterooms and why the oblong box is put into Wyatt’s room and not the empty room.
The time of the story is another important part of the setting because the time is delayed without explanation. The story starts by stating that the time to sail is on the fifteenth of the month of June, or if the weather is permitting the voyage will start on the fourteenth. However, the voyage is delayed and the author is told that the ship would not sail for a day or two due to the circumstances.
