Set on the remote island of Inishmaan, J M Synge’s intensely tragic play ‘Riders to the Sea’ tells the story of an Irish family living on a very dangerous island, under constant threat of the sea. The setting of the play has much symbolic significance. The play is set in Irishmann, the middle island among the group of three Aran Islands. Inishmore and Irishere being the other two. These islands are situated in Galway Bay, thirty miles away from the port of Galway on the Irish mainland JM Synge has spent some time, between 1898 and 1902 on Irishmann, the most horrific of the islands. Synge’s drama can be truly represented as ‘People’s Theatre’.
