film demonstrates the
way plays were acted out solely by men. This illustrated the lack of
belief that a woman could put on an act as well as a man. However, in
this movie, the part of Juliet winds up being acted out by a woman much to
the surprise of the audience. In response to this the people are appalled
and feel that she should be punished for taking on the role that only a “
man” should do. The queen’s reaction is one of empathy in the fact that
in her role as ruler this is exactly what she, herself, does. The film
doesn’t end on a happily ever after note, as one would expect. Viola ends
up marrying not the man she loves, but the man she is expected to marry.
The acting kept me enthralled by the choices of actors and their abilities
to carry out their roles. It certainly didn’t drag and in general kept my
emotions of happiness, despair, and even excitement involved throughout the
whole film.
