In William Shakespeare’s, Othello, the author uses several references from the Christian religion in his effort to define what it means to be human. Shakespeare strives to define humanity and what it means for the characters. They struggle against the devil, the first major reference from the Bible, which the characters define as that which tempts and brings one to sin. Meanwhile, a second reference that reoccurs is the story of Adam and Eve from the Old Testament, which is reflected in the plot as the characters fall from innocence. Once the suspicions suggested by Iago are brought to his attention, it takes little convincing before he is willing to seek revenge against both Desdemona and Cassio. The contrast in his quickness to judge his own wife versus the trust he has in Iago reveals the lack of competence in romantic relationships that had not been clearly evidenced until this scene. The temptation to blame Desdemona and hide his incompetence, reveals to the audience a weakness that Othello had previously tried to mask. Cassio is tempted by Iago as well. At first rejecting the offers to drink, he soon succumbs to Iago’s manipulations. Once he is drunk he even proclaims, “O though invisible spirit of wine, if thou hast no name to be known by, let us call thee devil!” 1 Cassio is known to be an excellent and loyal soldier, however, his tolerance for alcohol is a weakness that surfaces as a result of Iago’s manipulations.
