to hot- headed Tybalt the Cat in the medieval Reynard the Fox. In Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio baits Tybalt into dueling by exclaiming “Good king of cats, nothing but one of your/ nine lives, that I mean to make bold withal, and, as/ you shall use me hereafter, dry-beat the rest of the eight./ Will you pluck your sword out of his pilcher/ by the ears?” (3.1.78-82). In this excerpt, Shakespeare manages to reference Tybalt’s similarities to Tybalt the Cat including his eagerness to fight. In addition, similar to Tybalt the Cat, Tybalt is rather arrogant and makes rash decisions when his pride is on the line. For example, he challenges Benvolio to a duel in the first scene and is abruptly enraged by Romeo’s presence at Capulet’s party.
