He observed in that instant that when the white male becomes savage in his thought he produces self destruction. In this exact piece it gives an additional motive as to why Orwell's better judgement was defeated, which was "to avoind looking a fool." If something were to happen such as the elephant changing his behavior, stomping him to death, the natives would laugh at him and "that would never do." Once the natives mocked their leader, who was Orwell at the time, his control would be gone. Orwell wasn't just protecting himself, but the idea of white domination.
