has been forced to learn many lessons about the real world since her move from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was raised in a family who attempted to be strong and affectionate. lived comfortably in a two-story home and attended Catholic schools and occasionally ventured on widespread journeys (6). Each night her mother made sure she would pray for the poor and less fortunate. But to her, poverty seemed to be more like a fairy tale than reality (6). She never really knew who or what it was that she prayed for all those years until she moved into the Hope House.

As she talks about this she seems surprised that things like this actually occur. She then meets Patrick Sonnier, a death row inmate. Through him she is once again thrown into a world that she is unfamiliar with but she quickly learns all about the legal system and all of its inequities. She would probably agree with the saying, “Capital punishment means them without the capital get the punishment.” Taking what she has learned, she actively gets involved with the rights of the death row inmates.
She has been praised for taking a stand and she has been criticized for her involvement with the inmates and lack of involvement with the victims, yet she keeps going on strong and stands up for what she believes in. She knows, morally, that the government does not have a right to take the lives of citizens.
