Between the sixteenth and nineteenth century, there was an estimated 15 million Africans that were transported via slave ships to the Americas. To maximize profits slave merchants carried as many slaves as was physically possible on their ships.
One of the images we have shows an example of what the outside of an average slave ship would look like. Usually merchants would flood their ships with more slaves than normal. Another of the images we used was the picture of slaves being on top of other slaves. This image’s significance is that it showed the harsh living conditions on the ship.
