Before World War II, the women's role was simply to be a good wife, a good mother and a caretaker to the house. During World War II women made sacrifices for their family so they could take over the role the man of the house would normally have. it was the first time the government needed women to replace men in their jobs. Although women had some involvement in the First World war, there was no greater demand for women to join the workforce then during World War II. The female labor force grew by 6.5 million and 37% of all women were employed. The men that could not go to war were still working, the pay for a woman was less than what the men would make. Some men, and even government officials, were for the idea that if a woman was married, they did not see a need to pay her since her husband was still making money, that was not the case in the United States and women were still paid, even if it was less than the men. If it was not for women, the jobs may not have gotten done and the economy would have suffered, which is probably another reason they did not want to pay married women, the less money the government had to pay women the more money they had towards other things.
