One of the biggest agricultural issues California is facing today is soil salinization. Soil salinity is defined as the salt content in the soil, which can be detrimental if the content is higher than normal levels. The level of salinity has steady increased over the years, and is affecting California's water supply. Soil salinity is so important because it deteriorates the fertility of the soil and the runoff can get into the drinking water supply and will require more filtering.

Water that is high in salinity is collected in lakes and reservoirs specifically to keep the salt out of the soil, not to be dealt with any further. Some state and federal agencies have been organizing their power to deal with California's salinity problems.
Agencies like the Bureau of Reclamation, California Department of Water Resources, and the State Water Resources Control Board, and Regional Water Control Boards have been working on projects to construct lakes and prevent wildlife from approaching such lakes. These lakes would be collection points of agricultural drainage water and wastewater that is too high in salinity to be used again.
