INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this paper is to introduce, discuss, and analyze the book "Soul Mountain," by Gao Xingjian. Specifically, it will explain the purpose of Chapter 34 in the novel, while focusing on meaning, context, and the importance in the work as a whole.

The two characters in Chapter 34 embody the differences between men and women and how they communicate with one another. The woman relates a story from her youth, and the man relates a folk tale from his youth, but neither one listens to the other, or reacts to each other's story. importance of this chapter in the book as a whole is how the relationship represents the impediments the narrator saddles himself with as he tries to journey up his own personal "soul mountain." The woman who cries and does not understand him is just one of the obstacles he must face as he moves up the mountain, but the way they communicate (or do not communicate) represents the other obstacles which will try to keep him from reaching his goals. He must learn how to listen just as well as he relates a story, because it is only when he can truly hear the people around him that he will be able to understand where he is going, and reach his goals. We not only have to be able to speak and communicate effectively, we need to be able to listen effectively to really be a good communicator, and that is one of the lessons he must learn as he journeys up the mountain.
