1. South African legal system is classified as a mixed hybrid legal system because it contains elements from both major European legal traditions. South African inherited some part of law from the Dutch, who used a system based on Roman law. It also inherited law from the English. A civil law system inherited from the British and a customary law system inherited from indigenous Africans. That is why South Africa is classified as a mixed legal system.
