In the study of animal rights we have compared the lives of animals to that of human beings, this comparison is known as speciesism. The term speciesism is best defined by Peter Singer as a "prejudice or attitude of bias toward the interests of members of ones own species against those of members of other species" (Singer 432). He furthers his discussion of the term by saying that we use speciesism "in order to emphasize the similarities between sexist and racist practices on the one hand, and our treatment of animals on the other hand" (Singer 432).
