The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde

In our world everyone has both a good side and a bad side to his
character. If you are of weak mental ability, the evil side can take over
and destroy you. In Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of DR.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, this aspect, that of identity and personality can be
found. According to The American Heritage Dictionary, identity can be
defined as "the collective aspect of the set of characteristics by which a
thing is recognizable or known." In this book, Stevenson uses the
characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde to portray ones own identity, that of
the accepted and of the outcast.
Dr. Henry Jekyll represents the accepted person in the society. He

he is with his friends, by creating a new being for himself, he is
able to express himself without being judged as Dr. Jekyll. Hyde contains
all of the dark feelings of Dr. Jekyll, he is the alter ego. One can
distinguish this characterization from the description of Hyde. >"Mr.
Hyde was pale and dwarfish; he gave an impression of deformity without any
namable malformation, he had a displeasing smile, he had borne himself to
the lawyer with a sort of murderous mixture of timidity and boldness, and
he spoke with a husky, whispering and somewhat broken voice (109)."
Dr. Jekyll was forced to accept this part of his identity. He had
become addicted to this identity altering drug and was unable to tell
others about it for fear that he as Dr. Jekyll would become an outcast as
well. To hide his altered personality from others, Jekyll represses Hyde
