Born in 1876, Susan Glaspell was raised in Davenport, Iowa, where she graduated high school. A remarkable journalist, novelist, short-story writer, playwright, theatrical producer, director, and actor, Glaspell wrote for many newspapers including Morning Republican; and Des Moines Daily News. Bored with journalism from post-collegiate years, Glaspell quickly moved on to more fascinating forms of writing, such as fictional writing set in the regional Midwest with romantic plots (Glaspell, 252.) theater. From 1916-1922, Glaspell spent many summers producing plays by American playwrights, as well as writing, acting, and producing nine plays, including Trifles (Glaspell, 252.) Dissatisfied with the direction of Provincetown Players, Glaspell and Cook dismissed themselves from the group.
Cook died in 1924, but Glaspell continued to write and publish novels, such as Judd Rankin's Wife (1928). In 1930, Glaspell won the Pulitzer Prize for drama for Alison's Room, which was based on Emily Dickenson (Glaspell, 253.) Influenced by Henrik Ibsen and August Strindberg, Glaspell advanced her personal ideas, as seen in Trifles, of "her unsparing, depiction of women's narrow, thwarted, isolated, and subjugated lives in rural, regional settings (Glaspell, 253.)
