As of today there are about 7 billion people in the world. Of those 7 billion people 3 million are employed. Half of those employed are happy with their jobs while the rest are just trying to make ends meet in less than desirable places like those working in sweatshops across the world. Sweatshops are not good due to their poor work conditions, low wages, and exploitations of their employees. wonderful opportunities in foreign lands, young women often pay thousands of dollars in recruitment and contract "fees", tying themselves to contractual obligations that can last for years. Because their wages are often only $.10 to $.20 per hour, the women may receive no wages for years as they attempt to pay off these debts. If the women try to return home without fulfilling their contractual obligations, they are often blacklisted, fined, or arrested. Many women are not paid even without such debt. Many are paid less than a dollar a day for work days in excess of 12 hours or more. To make ends meet after 15 hour workdays, many workers bring more work home in the evenings.
The Department of Labor estimates that one third of sweatshops operate with serious health and safety violations. Many of these factories, as well as the women's living quarters, are crowded, filthy, and rat-infested. They are located behind barbed wire fences that are monitored by armed guards.
