Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong Themes

I found the story, "Sweetheart of the Song Tra Bong," to be very strange, and contradictory to the general themes of the other stories. Mark Fossie, a soldier that was once in the same company as Rat Kiley, brought his girlfriend to the medical outpost where he was stationed in Vietnam. It was relatively out of the way of the fighting, and he thought the environment would be suitable for her (he notes that she is a naïve, sweet girl). She eases into the military lifestyle. She swims in the rivers, helps with the sick and wounded, and innocently learns about the army routines. But after a while, Fossie starts to notice that she is disappearing at nights. it is one of the few parts of the book (if only) that shows an eagerness to engage in combat. The only thing most of the soldiers are eager to do is leave Vietnam, and not become more engaged in the "conflict."
Most of the "outside" thoughts of the soldiers are those of an eagerness to return home. Many want to see their loved ones again, and return to their daily routines of normalcy. When Jimmy Cross is searching through the campground for Kiowa's body, his imagines himself back in his hometown, teeing off on the first hole of the local golf course. It is made clear through much of the book that, unlike some of the other wars in American history, this was one of great confusion. The soldiers did not have a clear objective. They did not know their purpose, and so much of their concentration was focused on surviving, and returning to their former lives.
