The movie Sybil is based on a true story about a young woman named Shirley Ardell Mason. In the movie, Sybil, played by Sally Field, who is now an adult is suffering from psychological trauma stemming from having been severely and constantly abused sexually, physically, verbally, and mentally by her mother at a very young age. In some instances, the movie does not show details about the specific act of abuse that Sybil's mother performed upon her. Instead it eludes to the horrific nature of these acts by showing Sybil's reaction to the instruments that were used to abuse her. Once at the top of this loft, Sybil's mother would untie her and then leave her locked in a box for lengthened periods of time.
