of the mother blind-folding Sybil and then pulling her to the top of the loft of their barn by her wrists using a rope which she had looped around wet hand towels that she had tied around Sybil's wrists. Once at the top of this loft, Sybil's mother would untie her and then leave her locked in a box for lengthened periods of time.
By illustrating Sybil's experience, the movie shows the direct relationship between exposure to severe levels of abuse during childhood and the development of a condition called Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), more formally known as Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), in adulthood.
