Symbolism in Lord of the Flies

In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding the idea of civilisation versus savagery is presented to the reader. In the novel a group of school boys get stranded on an island after their plane crashed during World War Two without any adults. The boys have to design their own civilization with rules and regulations. Golding uses the symbols of the conch, the signal fire and Piggy's glasses to illustrate the battle between civilisation and savagery throughout the novel.

The reader is able to understand the boys desire for a civilized life and therefore realise how much of an impact the structure of societies today have on young children especially. Through the symbol of the conch Golding has further developed the idea of civilization versus society as he has established the strength that the idea of civilization has on the boys at the beginning of the novel. Without the ideas of civilizations embedded in people today, there would be limited proof of community and fairness that is demonstrated when people are put in trying situations.

Next, Golding used the symbol of the signal fire to establish the boys' transition as their more savage instincts begin to take hold. Ralph first established the signal fire as a way to attract passing aircraft or boats and consequently the hope of rescue was kept alive.
