the first scene of the movie, Bonasera is pledging, rather reluctantly, his loyalty to the Godfather. He says "Be my friend" (Puzo, Coppola pg)? Bonasera then bows. Don Corleone shrugs, suggesting that this is not quite good enough. Bonasera says, "Godfather" (Puzo, Coppola pg)? Then kisses the Don's hand, to which the Godfather says, "Good" (Puzo, Coppola pg). The Don has agreed to do Bonasera a favor, however, someday Bonasera will be asked to do the Don a favor. A favor for a favor, this is how the family operates.
The next symbolic scene is the horse's head in the producer's bed. Jack Woltz had said, "Johnny Fontane will never get that movie. I don't care how many dego, wop, guinea, greaseball goombas come out of the woodwork" (Puzo, Coppola pg). The horse had been one of Woltz's prize possessions.
