If I had created a revolutionary synthetic skin designed for human burn victims, and the government demanded that I test it on live animals, and furthermore required that I refrain from using anesthetics, my first response would be academic outrage. Likewise, many medicines that are compatible with the human system, such as aspirin, may be toxic for many animals. This is precisely why it is illegal for veterinarians to treat humans, and why human doctors send their own pets to a vet! Governmental ignorance is further displayed in suggesting that the use of anesthetics would invalidate the process. Even if the transgenic problem were ignored, this is sheer foolishness. There is no way this synthetic skin will be used in a medical setting without the simultaneous use of painkillers and local and general anesthesia. Our skin must be compatible with regularly used anesthetics so that it can be used on human subjects without causing negative reactions to their painkillers.
