T, Boone Pickens is a legend in the oil business. He was born in Holdenville, Oklahoma in 1928. He found Mesa Petroleum in 1956 which became one of the largest independent Oil companies by 1981. Mesa Petroleum was sold to Parker and Parsley Petroleum in 1997 and T. Boone founded his hedge fund BP Capital Management LP and used that money to invest in Energy stocks. Pickens earned a degree in geology in 1951 at Oklahoma State University . Pickens worked for Phillips Petroleum for three years and in 1954 with 2500 dollars in borrowed money, he and two investors formed a company called Petroleum Exploration. so he initiated a company program for physical fitness. In 1985 Mesa Oil was named The Most Physically Fit Company in America. He felt oil companies would be more successful if its employees and share holders were healthy and happy.

In 1980 and early 90's he began focusing on foreign markets. He was also convinced that natural gas was a viable alternative and would lessen United States dependence on oil. He formed the Pickens Fuel Corp. in 1997. It was the eighth company he helped go public. The company owned and operated gas fueling stations from British Columbia to the Mexican border.

Pickens was also an advocate for protecting land. He promoted habitats for quails and was active in creating a model for local ranchers on how to care for land. His ranch in the Panhandle of Texas was a example of how to respect the land and the environment.
