Tailgating

Tailgating before football games has become a tradition in most college and professional football games. Their purpose is to simply excite the fans and allow them to enjoy the game to a greater extent. However, with the mass of rowdy fans, a number of problems also arise. One instance of such a problem was an accident that took place recently before a Yale-Harvard game. A truck struck and killed one tailgater and injured two others. The character of tailgaters has also been questioned as the situation arose. In this case, Ross was one of the better behaved members participating in the tailgate. His friend Christine Jun vouched for him saying, "Ross had only been drinking apple juice that morning," and he was driving the truck because "was among the most responsible members of the fraternity sponsoring the tailgate" (Needham). Ross was clearly the designated driver, concerned with the safety of others more than his own pleasure. In addition, witness Tim Walker stated, "The driver looked shocked.
