The novel is set during the "Progressive Era", a time in which large amounts of technological developments and industrialization took place. The era also brought a lot of immigrants as well as an increasingly urban American society. All these massive technological advancements increased efficiency and mass production; however, what Doctorow brings into question is the consequences of the new technology for the American worker. This is a debate that concerns national community, more specifically what is Doctrow's opinion on the technological advancements of this time?

the "human" element of production will be completely eliminated. Humans will be completely turned into machines. Doctrow's opinion is also clearly stated with the coming of WWI after these technological advancements, along with Morgan's declining health in end of the novel. To me it is clear that it is Doctrow's opinion that the technological advancements have a negative effect on national community.
