The first time Dick Diver is introduced he is said to be "going from umbrella to umbrella carrying a bottle and little glasses in his hands."(Fitzgerald 11). Due to the extreme lifestyles portrayed, indulgence is expected, but Dick and many others commonly overindulge. We are shown from the very beginning what will lead him to ruin his seemingly perfect life, almost as a form of foreshadowing. As alcoholism slowly takes its advances on Dick, the audience is able to identify prominent changes in his actions. He seems to develop multiple personalities, and becomes reckless and unaware of the effect he is making on others. He uses it to be able to set aside his own issues, leading him and others to making corrupt and ignorant decisions. Alcohol slowly degrades his spirit, marriage, and professional life, as he takes up drinking in order to cope with the various issues in his relationships.
