Almost 100 years to the exact date of today, Thomas Lanier Williams III, later known as Tennessee Williams, was born on March 26, 1911 to Cornelius and Edwina Williams in Columbus, Mississippi. Williams’ childhood led to his famous noted literary works known by people everywhere today. Due to his father’s career, Thomas relied on the close relationship that he attained with his mother and grandparents. involved with the fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega. Being a part of this social club greatly helped Thomas to break out of his shell and become more sociable. After his father decided that the university was not concerned with furthering his son’s education in journalism, he removed him from the university and put him to work at a shoe factory. Depressed that he could no longer pursue his career in journalism, Tennessee would write literary works in his attic long hours of numerous nights. Williams’ depressions led to numerous successes in the literacy world.
Tennessee’s first major success was after he finished the rewriting of “The Gentleman Caller” and began writing new plays. The National Institute of Arts and Letters gave a $1,000 award to Tennessee for a collection of his one-act plays and Battle of Angels.
