That Was Then This Is Now: Theme Essay

One of the themes in “That Was Then and This is Now” is Brotherhood. The main characters Bryon and Mark are like brothers. In the beginning of the book when Bryon was describing their appearances; Bryon states on, page 13, “He was my best friend and we were like brothers”. Also when they are in the hospital for their mom they meet a kid named Mike. Mike had mistaken them for brothers, but Bryon doesn't bother to correct him. He also then says " For a minute I really felt good about Mark's telling this guy we were brothers". Bryon felt security and pride in being Mark's brother.

Mark and Bryon were always on the same side growing up, but then Bryon's perception changes on their actions and Mark himself. This leads to our next theme.

The next theme is reality and perception. Throughout the entire book, Bryon's point of view extensively comments on people. He explains his perceptions of the other characters and of the situations around him. His observations are on characters physical appearances as well as on their internal qualities. Even though they are accurate he has an advantage of writing the story from his point of view. since he has a future look back on the past with understanding he realizes that his observations are only from his personal subjective perspective. Everyone has different perspectives on the reality there are different rights and wrongs it just depends on where the person comes from.
