Chess was invented in India approximately 2000 years ago. Since, chess spread across nations to become an international sport. Chess is not just a game; it imprints values upon the players. Sportsmanship, strategy, time management, increased focus and concentration, and friendships are some benefits that come to the players that play for a lifetime. I have been playing for fourteen years and in tournaments the last thirteen years and have seen myself grow as a student and as a person.

I have tutored at Bartow Elementary Academy in chess. When I arrived, some of the players were experienced and some were newcomers to the game. I saw that some would cry when they lost and some would brag that they had won. However, I saw the potential that they had; along with Mrs. Waymire, we have strived to bring up the potential of the team. I was responsible for teaching strategies to the experienced players, while Mrs. Waymire taught the game to the newcomers. We occasionally switched so I could teach basic strategies to the newbies. I played all of the children one on one and imprinted my love of the game upon them. Teaching them, I have improved as a person, but I have seen dramatic changes in the students, that I cannot see in myself. I have seen the children learning how to lose and be honorable to the winner and learn from the loss.
