The Actions of Menelaos and Telemachus

The welcoming and hospitable actions of Menelaos and Telemachus illustrate the proper manner in which to comply with the laws of hospitality. When Telemachus asks for permission to leave Sparta, Menelaos replies "It is just as wrong to rush a guest's departure/ When he doesn't want to go, as it is/ To hold him back when he is ready to leave. / Make a guest welcome for as long as he stays/ And send him off whenever he wants to go/ But do stay until I can bring some gifts out/ And load them onto you chariot, fine gifts" (Book 15 74-80).
