In the book, The Alcoholic Republic: An American Tradition by William J. Rorabaugh there are many arguments between 1790 and 1840 about how Americans drink more alcoholic beverages. He makes an argument that early American society was a place where alcohol flowed freely through every leave of society. a reliable narrative of early America. Americans drunk great quantities of alcohol. The beverages that the Americans drunk we mostly distilled liquors, commonly known as spirits, whiskey, rum, gin, and brandy. All of those, liquors were made up of 45 percent of alcohol. The Americans even got drunk off hard cider. They drunk more hard cider then they drunk rum.

The first problem that his conclusions face is that scarce amount of statistical data from the colonial era onwards. Many women had to drink alcohol-based medicines for their health. Eastern ladies drank in mixed company at social dinners, suppers, and evening parties and when they were at pioneer dances, the whisky bottles were passed around from mouth to mouth. White males were taught to drink as children, even as babies.
