is anti-slavery, the relative attractiveness of all the white characters is in stark contrast to that of the African face at the beginning. That no 'real' conflict exists in the South is underlined by the image of a puppy and a kitten playfully wrestling on a plantation. The title to this-"Hostilities"-suggests as its meaning that no hostilities of any real weight or merit existed in such an environment, before the war.

The first section "War" ends with the end of the Civil War. That the Civil War was unnecessary is, in a much more bloody fashion, suggested by the title "War's Peace" as the camera pans in a wide-shot over trenches of dead soldiers. The soldiers in the trenches are all white, and this also illustrates how the film's selection of images are not so much anti-Northern, but anti-Black.
