The Black Cat Genre

In "The Black Cat," most of the drama occurs in the home, and revolves around the narrator's relationship with his wife and pets. Similar to many horror stories, this one also combines the family drama with the horror. This taps into some of our deepest fears - fears of what can go wrong at home. Home is where we are supposed to be most comfortable and safe, and is also where we are most vulnerable. But in this story, character does not feel comfortable at home at all.

The title only references one black cat. Does this mean there is only one cat in the story? Is the second cat Pluto the undead? Or, is it possible that Pluto didn't really die? In that last scenario Pluto somehow survives the hanging and escapes the wall. Then, either on purpose or by coincidence, the cat meets the man at the place where he's drinking and, well, you know the rest.

The two-cat theory can't be ignored. If we remove the possibility of supernatural events, and assume that Pluto and the second cat are both real, this reading might even be scarier than a supernatural one.
