The narrator of “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allen Poe is, without a doubt, crazy. The first word that comes to mind when thinking of the exact type of mental illness that the narrator suffers from is, Schizophrenia. When a person is schizophrenic their personality can change drastically from one minute to the next. The main character’s emotions jump all over the place through out the story. One minute he loves his cat; and the next he is killing it. It all seems very odd because that is not normal behavior.

with the cat than before. So, he takes the cat out to the back yard and hangs him from a tree. This was the very same cat that, at the beginning of the story, he loved and cared for so deeply. After a short while, the narrator gets a second cat that resembles the old one, he decides he will love it immensely and not harm it in any way. However, the second cat begins to annoy him as well.
The third example of the main character’s mental instability is his attempt to kill the second cat. It was bad enough that he kills the first one, but to try kill another is ridiculous. The narrator fails in his attempt to kill the second cat and he kills his wife by accident. Instead of having feelings of sadness and remorse for his mistake, he immediately decides to hide the body. Never once did the narrator show any type of emotion for the accidental murder of his wife. This leads the reader to believe that this was really what he wanted anyway.
