In the novel The Bluest Eye, Toni Morrison confronts powerful issues such as conformity, identity theft, race, and gender. Morrison creates a word where readers can actively imagine the ongoing adversities the characters of the novel all faced. What made this novel even more profound is the reality behind each page and the struggles that where all to real back in its time. In a world where much is taken and even less is given identity and conformity become the building blocks for survival. Some would say it was almost imperative to know ones self, if you stand for nothing you fall for anything.

Shirley is ugly and can’t imagine why the girls want to look like her. Claudia resistance to what the world believed was beauty tell us she has a mind of her own and that unlike many of those surrounding her does not feel the need to conform to the “whites” way of thinking. It’s as if a sort of identity theft has occurred, when Claudia breaks the doll you see the damage that has been dealt to the identities of many of those around her.
