the snow and use it to insulate him from the outside air. Buck was built for hard work; he was a huge, muscular and intimidating dog. However, Buck had to learn how to adapt to pulling a sled in every type of snow imaginable.
Buck’s environment was not exclusively made up of his surroundings; those who accompanied him were also a large part of his environment. Many of Buck’s masters helped to transform him into the wild, emotionless dog he became. Each sled driver’s expectations of his or her dogs were truly too high. In five short months, Buck traveled three thousand miles while pulling his masters sled. In order to maintain discipline, the dogs were whipped and beaten until they accomplished many unthinkable tasks. After losing thirty pounds due to starvation, Buck was still expected to fulfill his absurd load of work. Near death, Buck was beaten several times while under the power of Hal and Charlie.
