The Cask Of Amontillado: A Vengeful Setting

In the “Cask of Amontillado”, Poe uses vague background information and dark, decayed surroundings to illuminate the vengeful personality of Montresor as well as foresee the inevitable destiny that befalls Fortunato. Montresor’s life is surrounded if not engulfed by revenge and Poe focuses in on this by eliminating background history. Fortunato is also depicted quite well by surroundings and atmosphere in addition to the fate that awaits him. Poe generally centers the story around this one event, Fortunatos demise, and excludes all other insignificant information, which is shown throughout his work.

The setting of the event as it unfolds begins at a jovial party with costumes and such. Poe establishes a rather happy and cheerful mood to surround the situation at hand in order to establish Fortunato’s state of being. Fortunato is dressed much like a clown with all the bells and whistles, which portrays him as being bright and flamboyant in the crowd. The surroundings characterize Fortunato to be a rather social giant with many charming aspects about him. It is made quite apparent that Fortunato is having a good time at the party and that he is rather drunk. By describing the scene, Poe makes Fortunato out to be the life of the party, which everyone knew and loved. A personality so converse from Montresor’s, that it literally killed him.
