King Ludwig II was born on 25th August 1845 in Schloss Nymphenburg to -King Maximilian II of Bavaria and Marie of Prussia. II had always been reclusive, but after becoming king he began building a fantasy world around himself as a way of coping with the realities of being a “head of state with only rights and duties and little freedom of action” (German-Way). He built castles as refuges from his life, three of which were Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, and Herrenchiemsee. He designed a fourth castle called Falkenstein, but this one was never built.

Neushwanstein

Neushwanstein (originally called “New Hohenschwangau Castle”) was planned to copy Versailles and the Byzantine style. Neuschwanstein Castle was constructed from 1869-1892, and is considered to be the most famous castle in the world. “Ludwig II wrote his friend Richard Wagner in May 1868: ‘I intend to rebuild the old castle ruins of Hohenschwangau by the Pöllat gorge (Pöllatschlucht) in the genuine style of the old German knightly fortresses.’” (Bayerische).
