"The Chrysanthemums"

The Chrysanthemums was written with the struggles that women of Steinbeck's day faced. His works are used with passion, anger, drama, and happiness. This is a story about a woman 35 years old, married, and not content with her life. Elisa Allen and her husband Henry have no children. They live in a nice well kept ranch house and he provides good for her, but they lack excitement in their lives. She is confronted with an opportunity to change her life and feels that this will bring change, and excitement, of the unknown.

in bed. She gives him some sprouts of flowers and tells him how to take care of them while he is on the road. He fixes a few pots and pans for her takes the money and the pot of flowers and leaves. As he is leaving she is standing there whispering, "That's a bright direction. There's a glowing there." This could mean that it could be a way for her to run from her life.
When Henry comes home they are getting ready to go out, she is setting on the porch when he comes out and tells her how nice she looks, it seems to make her angry like it's the first time he has ever noticed. She feels like he treats her like a child not knowing how smart and beautiful she really is. He believes that there is a definite line drawn between the sexes without exception.
Elisa, in the start of the story is described as wearing a man's hat; bulky cloths with gloves working in dirt planting her flowers, homely could be a good description of her. When the tinker comes to her she doesn't seem to notice ...
