Approximately 1792 to 1750 BC A man by the name of Hammurabi, known to be the King of Babylon, and a long-lasting contribution to Mesopotamian civilization, had created a set of laws known today as The Code of Hammurabi. It is said he had created these laws to better govern every city-state in his empire. These 282 laws are known to be the earliest written and documented legal codes of all time. This law indicates that if any female were to be accused of sleeping with another man, without proof, the woman must jump into the river just for the sake of her husband. In today's society this law would never pass. Today, women and men are equal. Males and females in modern day society work the same jobs, have equality in government and have equality in marriage.
However, there are laws that do protect certain rights for Babylonian women. Specifically, law #138. This rule states that "if a man wishes to separate from his wife who has borne him no children, he shall give her the amount of her purchase money and the dowry which she brought from her father's house, and let her go ''. This goes to show that the men of Babylon did respect their women to a degree where they believed the woman should get back the amount of her purchase money and dowry she is owed, for having to suffer the separation.
